The Justice Hema Committee report has caused controversy in the Malayalam film industry, leading to calls for similar committees to address sexual harassment in other Indian film industries. In Karnataka, members of the Film Industry For Rights and Equality (FIRE) recently met with Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to discuss creating a safe working environment for female artists. Following this, the film chamber held a meeting with female artists on September 16 to address sexual harassment and other abuses in the industry. Prominent members of the film fraternity share their perspectives on the issue:
- NM Suresh, President of the Karnataka Film Chamber, stated that the Karnataka State Commission for Women has urged them to discuss women's safety in the industry, and they will be hosting a meeting with female artists to address this concern.
- Sa Ra Govindu, former President of the Producers' Association and Film Chamber, expressed confusion about the resurgence of the #MeToo issue in the Kannada industry, emphasizing their readiness to handle industry matters and encouraging parties to approach them for resolution rather than resorting to false complaints.
- Ba Ma Harish, a producer and former President of the film chamber, emphasized the importance of consent in interactions between men and women in the industry. He acknowledged that any forced actions constitute a #MeToo situation, which should be addressed legally.
